Would you answer this question? Yes or No? Another one of the five projects created by the students of the Universities of Melbourne and Pretoria during their travelling studio received positive responses from the audience during their presentation. The challenge posed by the students was how to give a voice to people's dreams and ambitions while also regenerating public space in the inner city of Pretoria. This project centered around a design for a number of interactive art installations that could be connected to an existing frame in a prominent, but currently underutilized public space; Lilian Ngoyi Square in the inner city. The art installations would be linked to reflect the theme in question, in other words a question series centered around water, might be built up using water sprayers while one dealing with communication might involved live performances. The information gathered by the installation would be useful in two ways; 1. it creates a vibrant public space for the inner city community to interact with each other in a playful environment (even thought topics may not be), and 2. it creates an opportunity for city officials, researchers, and community groups to get an understand for the needs, ambitions and aspirations of people in Pretoria.
